You are just recovering from Thanksgiving and yet it is officially the holiday season. Cue the frantic dash to purchase appropriate holiday gifts. Personally, I’m a fan of practical gifts. So here is a round up of practical food based, non food gifts perfect for everyone from the environmentalist to the student just trying to get through the semester:
Fair Trade Coffee & Reusable Coffee Filters
Lets be real: you definitely have at least 3 sleep deprived friends living on coffee who are hemorrhaging money to keep their coffee fix going. Save them some money and help them green-it-up at the same time with some reusable coffee filters. It doesn’t matter how you make your coffee there is a reusable coffee filter out there for you. Keurig? Single cup? Coffee pot? Yep. Yep. And Yep! They exist. Bonus for the Keurig you save a ton of money and control the quality of coffee being used. Pair it with some high quality fair trade coffee, or even better yet coffee subscription and then gift it off to your coffee obsessed or sleep deprived friend.
In the freezing dark and dreary days, your friends will be glad for a spot of green to brighten their days and their food. Herb Gardens can be bought in sets or are an easy DIY gift. And if they are growing their food at home then they don’t have to buy it in stores!
Plastic disposable water bottles are expensive and unnecessary, especially around UMD when we have water fountains that fill up your water bottle around every corner. Get a snazzy water bottle for your friend that refuses to invest in one and save their pockets and the earth. If you are feeling extra generous, stick an extra gift in there – candy bar, gift card, a nice pen, etc. and save yourself the wrapping as well.
For the person that complains water bottles are annoying to carry, grab them a dishwasher safe, foldable bottle like this one.
Or for the diva who to be fancy grab a bottle that juices lemons or limes for a fresh burst.
Bees wax clothes
This is for the friend that quietly cries every time they throw out a plastic bag. NO MORE PLASTIC BAGS with these babies. Liberate that hippy friend of yours from a life tied down to plastic.
Lunch Box/ Tupperware
I kid you not, my friend just asked me to buy her a lunch bag for Christmas. She wanted an insulted bag to keep her food cold for hours which her normal assortment of bags just can’t do. If food quality and variety is important to your friend that is always on the run, they may appreciate a good lunch bag. Tupperware is also great since its reusable, and keeps food from getting smushed, and soggy.
