We mentioned in our last post that winter is a time for planning for the upcoming season and years. But why plan so far ahead?
For nutritious and delicious produce, crops cannot be planted in the same place over and over again. Different crops take different nutrients from the soil, so crop rotation (moving crops’ location from season to season) is essential to ensuring a healthy crop. Here is a sample of Terp Farm’s 2016 Crop Rotation on 6 different fields.
The different colors represent different plant families. Different plant families take certain nutrients from soils and restore different nutrients. By balancing what is taken and restored to the soil over the years Terp Farm can be ensured to have a productive season and good produce.
