Choosing Healthy Sweets and Treats

It’s that time of year when chocolates and candies abound. You can indulge once in a while and still cut back on calories and fat. Here are a few ideas for guilt-free snacks when you’re faced with sweet temptation:

  • Whole fruit is an excellent source of fiber and can also help to decrease the risk of heart disease. Try freezing bananas, then peel and eat like a frozen fruit bar. Seedless grapes are also wonderful frozen treats.
  • Nonfat yogurt makes a yummy snack or dessert. Add granola and fruit for a fun parfait.
  • Angel food cake is a fat-free delight. Try it topped with fruit.
  • Sugar-free Jell-O has no calories or carbohydrates. Mix Jell-O with fruit cocktail for a special treat.
  • Try calcium-fortified, sugar-free hot chocolate. Keep the sweet chocolate taste with the added bonus of the bone-strengthening mineral calcium without the extra calories and sugar found in regular hot chocolate.
