Community Outreach & Involvement
Dining Services gives back to the community by participating in charitable activities and events on and off campus. Our efforts include:
- Annual Teddy Bear Drive supporting the Bonnie Johns Children’s Fund. Dining Services staff all across campus collected teddy bears, which were distributed to vulnerable children in homeless shelters and crisis centers, and through social service organizations. Find out how you can donate a bear.
- Donations of leftover and surplus food items to DC Central Kitchen. DC Central Kitchen distributes more than 4,000 meals each day to over 100 agencies providing services to men, women, and children in need in metropolitan Washington, DC.
- Partner with the Food Recovery Network The FRN is a nationwide student run organization that originated at the University of Maryland. The FRN collects unusable, pre-consumer waste and distributes it to local food banks. The FRN works within the existing systems: volunteers are Food Safety certified, collections are scheduled and distribution is done quickly to appropriate groups with appropriate facilities.
- Kellog’s Away from Home for every bowl of Kellogg’s cereal purchased during the promotion period, Kellogg’s will donate a bowl of cereal to a local food bank. In the 2013-2014 academic year, 100 cases (the maximum) was donated by the University of Maryland and Kellogg’s to the Capitol Area Food Bank.
