Student Achievement Awards

It gives us great pleasure to announce the recipients of our 2020 student awards and scholarship programs. Unfortunately, our celebration of these wonderfully talented individuals is on hold until we can safely return to campus, but in the meantime, please join us in celebrating their accomplishments:

From the Committee: Sarah and Apongnwu have made significant impacts to the quality of life for students and employees of the University of Maryland. We are especially grateful for their hard work and dedication to the Division. Please join me in congratulating our winners.


Christopher M.Carey Customer Service Award        Patrick Merkel

Pat has worked in our Concessions group for many years, beginning as a special events employee, becoming a Stand Manager, then a full-time student employee and now a Student Manager.

His nominator writes “Pat demonstrates exceptional customer service on terrapin game days – directly and indirectly to our students, faculty, staff and campus guests including our non-profit organizations.  He leads by example and loves to teach others working in our concessions stands how to deliver the best service with a smile.”

Patricia S. Higgins Scholarship         Julie Schoonover

Julie has worked as a Student Nutritionist since April 2019 and in that short time, she has already made a great impact and contribution to our student engagement efforts.

In her submission,Julie writes “I enjoyed having the opportunity to educate students about nutrition through our Stall Seat Journals, table tents, online blog posts, and National Nutrition Month. I am very fortunate to work with staff members in Dining who are equally passionate about this field, and I am excited to continue my role with Dining Services for the rest of my college career.”

Emma Powers Student Employee of the Year         Katherine Jimenez

Katherine has worked in Catering for three years, presently holding the position of Student Manager. Katherine manages events, provides support to the Student Supervisors and handles office duties as well.

Her nominator writes “Katherine is an example of a true leader. She is the most reliable student that we have here at Good Tidings Catering. For example, recently we had multiple events added and no staff to spare. Katherine volunteered herself to work all day just to make sure all the events would go smoothly. That shift started at 4:30am and ended at 12 midnight. That’s dedication!”

Each recipient of these three Dining Services awards will receive a $1,000 award.  Please join us in thanking all of them for their service to our department.  Congratulations, Pat, Julie and Katherine, well deserved!!
