Healthy Tailgate Options
As the football season gets under way and you are out to support your favorite team, remember these helpful tips next time you are tailgating.
- Try fresh vegetables such as carrots and celery with your dip
- When cooking use low-fat cream cheese, sour cream, and cheeses
- Try fruit kabobs for a sweet taste at your tailgate
- Use lean meats and whole grain breads for your sandwiches
- Moderate your alcohol intake. Alcohol can lead to hunger by causing your blood sugar to drop, so keep an eye on your drinking.
- Eat before you go to a tailgate party. Going hungry often leads to eating more food at the tailgate.
- Always use a plate rather than picking off of dishes. Using a plate will help you to eat less because you see how much you’re about to eat.
- And don’t forget about food safety at your tailgate! Keep cold foods in a cooler and hot foods hot. Put all foods away within 2 hours (or 1 hour if it is above 90 degrees outside!)
Also remember the importance of food safety when grilling at your tailgate:
- Marinate meat in the refrigerator and never on the counter!
- Cook food to the proper temperature of 165 degrees.
- Keep all raw meats away from ready-to-eat foods.
- Refrigerate all food in the proper amount of time- 2 hours!
