August’s tip

During these hazy, hot and humid days of August our bodies often need more water to stay hydrated. Are you drinking enough?

Many of us often reach for an ice cold glass of water for relief on hot summer days, but are we eaching for it enough to stay hydrated? It is recommended that at minimum, the average adult should consume eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. Additional considerations like level of physical activity, lean muscle mass and exterior temperature actually raise the total amount of water that we should be drinking in a day.

An easy way to ensure you are meeting your needs is to keep track of what you are drinking during the day in addition to any frozen juice bars or icy treats you are eating. Try keeping track by tallying marks in your day planner, or putting a post it note on the refrigerator and tallying each time you get a drink, or add a water tracking app to your iphone! If you are not drinking enough try carrying a water bottle around with you, it acts as a constant reminder to drink more water!

Getting in the habit of drinking more fluids may take time, so increase your levels gradually and eventually you will easily meet your needs and stay hydrated.
