February’s tip

Heart-Healthy Foods

February is American Heart Month. Cardiovascular diseases are America’s number one killer. Do you know what types of foods to eat to keep your heart healthy?

Blueberries: Blueberries contain many heart-healthy nutrients including anthocyanins (an antioxidant), fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and Manganese. Enjoy blueberries as part of a healthy breakfast, add blueberries to yogurt, or mix blueberries with your favorite fruit to create a fruit smoothie.

Salmon: Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which play an important role in a heart healthy diet. Enjoy salmon as a main dish, in salads, or on top of a bagel.

Soy Protein: Soy protein products contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Soy has also been known to lower triglyceride levels which can decrease your chance of developing cardiovascular disease. Try a soy protein bar, soy nuts, edamame, tofu, or soy milk.

Oatmeal: Studies show that oats help lower cholesterol levels, keep you regular, and could help prevent certain cancers. Eat oatmeal for breakfast or try adding in oats when baking.

Spinach: Spinach is a great source of phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals. Try adding spinach to your salads, use spinach as a pizza topping, or mix with pasta.

Almonds: Almonds are high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, fiber, phytosterols, and mono- and polyunsaturated fats. Snack on almonds for a satisfying snack or try adding sliced almonds to salad.
