The holiday season offers a lot of temptations, but there are ways to make sure you’re getting a lot of nutrients. Make sure you’re keeping up with your regular exercise routine and planning ahead (don’t’ go to a party on an empty stomach!). Here are some tips for healthy holiday eating:
• Think about portion sizes. Stick with just one scoop, one roll, or one slice of pie.
• Enjoy things in moderation. Get one serving and stick with that.
• Make sure your plate is full of small portions with lots of variety. Try some meat, a starch (mashed potatoes, a pasta salad, or a roll), and a vegetable (salad, green beans, squash, etc.).
• Don’t fill up on appetizers. For the pre-meal snacking, try to stick to raw fruits or vegetables with low-calorie dressings.
• Remember drinks add calories too! Just one glass of wine, or one beer, contains about 110-150 calories. Eggnog usually has about 350 calories per cup!
• Pick your desserts wisely. Desserts that tend to be very high in calories include Pecan pie, fudge, and fruitcake. Try low-calorie ice cream (one scoop), pumpkin pie, or one cookie.
